Salford students will have their last instalment of rent paid for by the university.
Campus Living Villages have sent an email to its residents confirming that they will not be charged if they do not plan on returning.
The chief executive officer of CLV, Lee McLean, and the pro-vice-chancellor student experience Sam Grogan of the University of Salford thanked students for their patience and understanding as they establish their next steps regarding student accommodation.
“We have been working together with the university to address your concerns regarding payment for the final term, now that on-campus face-to-face teaching is no longer possible due to Coronavirus/COVID-19.”
The preferred partner for student accommodation at the University of Salford has said that for students who no longer require their rooms and have yet to, or already vacated the village, they will not have to pay the last instalment of their contract.
For those still staying in CLV’s accommodation, or those who intend to return to their flats, they are still expected to pay.
The advice given in the email to those still on site says: “In line with government advice, we strongly advise that even if you are able to, that you do not leave.
“We will continue to provide you with a safe and secure place to live.”
Rhys Scott, a resident still living in Eddie Colman, said that he thinks that while he hasn’t received any support from the onsite staff, he thinks that CLV have handled the situation well.
He added: “It took them a while to start closing things down.
“But the virus isn’t here and if it is, they’ve done well to stem it, so they must be doing something right.”
The 19-year-old student has said that living on-site day to day is surprisingly fast, playing games, cooking and watching TV to pass the time.
The student accommodation company has said they are working together with the university to ‘explore ways of providing accommodation for key NHS workers, and for those of you still in accommodation, this may mean that we ask you to move to another block or flat.’
Anyone facing financial difficulty or support needs are urged to contact askUS at the University of Salford.
