Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long-Bailey has reportedly claimed that she would like to offer Jeremy Corbyn a seat in her shadow-cabinet if she were to win the Labour leadership race.
This comes after she has been labelled a “Corbyn-continuity candidate” by critics, after he led a Labour government to their biggest defeat since 1935 in the December 2019 General Election.
Although she supported him throughout his time as leader, she has made it clear she’s “very different” to Corbyn when it comes to her approach.
However, when asked earlier this month whether she would let Corbyn in her Cabinet if she becomes prime minister, the Sun on Sunday reported that Long-Bailey replied: “I’d like to but I don’t know whether he wants to do it because he said not.
“It’s up to him. I love him so.”
Richard Burgeon, who has been described as the “hard left” candidate for deputy leader, has also voiced support for Jeremy Corbyn and has said he’d be an ideal Foreign Secretary.
It has also been reported that Long-Bailey rated Corbyn a “10/10” for his leadership, in an interview with ITV, despite a section of the party blaming him for the election defeat.
Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark and a Corbyn critic, Neil Coyle, expressed: “It’s quite incredible that when the country has given Jeremy Corbyn a mark of 0/10, she gives him 10/10 and would even offer him a job. This is fantasy politics at its worst.”
Around fifty Labour MPs have allegedly said they would step down if the Salford and Eccles MP was to become leader.
The conference to announce the results of the Labour leadership election will be announced on April 4 2020.
