The Agnes Hopkins Centre is tackling social isolation and trying to establish a welcoming community in Swinton by holding lots of activities this winter to get people out the house and talking again.
The centre, which opened in 1955, is providing the public with a range of sessions from curling to sequence dancing for only £1-£3 per person. Funding has helped the centre with refurbishments and new equipment but the team behind the centre say they are going to struggle to stay open over Christmas.
On Tuesday afternoon the ‘Keep Fit’ programme aims to get the elderly population of the local area getting out of the house and having some fun with exercise.
Isabel Clapham, the volunteer instructor who has been working at the centre for more than 30 years, said: “It can be a bit out the way but it’s only a bus ride away then a easy walk up to it.”
The club is promoting learning, creativity, participation; and healthy living through their meals and exercise classes.
