Walkden Town Centre’s shopping district is poised for a major transformation as The Derwent Group, its owner, unveils ambitious redevelopment plans.
The property company is set to inject £15 million into the area, outlining proposals that include the demolition of Egerton Walk and Victoria Square, making way for a modern façade featuring contemporary retail units.
In addition to the demolition, the redevelopment initiative envisions the creation of “temporary green spaces” in the vacated zones. The Derwent Group envisions these spaces evolving into a “flexible venue” for various outdoor events.
The Derwent Group aims to conclude community engagement this month and plans to submit the planning application by mid-month. A decision on the planning application is anticipated in February of next year.
Bolton South East MP, Yasmin Qureshi shared: “The plans look very promising, and will bring the old section of the centre up to date.
“I understand a public consultation is underway in the Link Mall, running until Friday, October 6. I encourage everyone to engage with it, and I look forward to seeing the full plans submitted towards the end of the year.”
Excitement among the public echoes as plans are becoming closer. Nick Mastin, a resident of Walkden exclaimed: “I’m excited that Walkden is being put on the map, and I can’t wait for this to be finished.”
This sentiment reflects the anticipation and positive outlook surrounding the redevelopment. Another member of the public, Eileen Quick states, ‘This will bring a new outlook to Walkden and hopefully encourage tourism.’
This redevelopment coincides with opening of a new branch of The Range at Ellesmere Shopping Centre.
