With the end of 2019 approaching, we’ve compiled a list of what music students and residents of Salford have been listening to throughout the decade and throughout 2019.
Maybe unsurprisingly, Ed Sheeran tops the list of most listened to artist and with eight UK number ones during the decade, he also features in the top five for the most streamed artist globally.
However, only one of Ed Sheeran’s singles made the list of Salford’s most listened to, (“I Don’t Care” featuring Justin Bieber), highlighting the strength of his album work and the consistent quality output.
Alongside Ed Sheeran in our list are Arctic Monkeys who, despite a three-year hiatus, have remained popular thanks to their critically acclaimed album “AM”.
Unlike Sheeran, Arctic Monkeys do have a range of popular songs within Salford, including “Crying Lightning” and “Secret Door” and have sold over 1.5million albums worldwide.
Other artists that are popular in Salford include Lewis Capaldi, Bring Me The Horizon and Foals.
What a year. As I sit at home with tonsillitis and forensic files on a forever loop it feels mental to look back over this year. Thanks to everyone who listens to us, even if it’s to help you fall asleep. pic.twitter.com/aZHqGUHqtM

The honors don’t stop there for Lewis Capaldi however as his song “Someone You Loved” is handsomely Salford’s most played song, according to our research.
Capaldi, shot to fame in 2017 with his song “Bruises” which soon reached 28 million streams on Spotify, making Capaldi the quickest unsigned artist to reach 25 million streams on the platform.
It’s clear that Capaldi has had a fantastic end to the decade and hopes are high he can replicate this in 2020 and beyond.

Just behind “Someone You Loved” is a surprising entry in the form of “Shallow” by Lady gaga and Bradley Cooper which featured in the film “A Star is Born”.
“Shallow” won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2019 and it is clear from its entry on this list that the film was a big hit in Salford.
Mabel’s “Don’t Call Me Up” was also a big hit in Salford as well as entries for Westlife’s “Better Man” and Billy Ocean’s “Love Really Hurts Without You”.
The most surprising entry was for Norwegian band Keiino and their song “Spirit in the Sky” which they performed at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest.
