“A celebration of silliness” Funny Looking Kids Comedy Club returns to Salford

The Funny Looking Kids comedy club returns to Ordsall Hall this Sunday 24th November 1.30-2.30pm. 

The successful, highly-reviewed show began three years ago in Liverpool and has monthly performances at the Bluecoat Art Gallery. Viewers can expect to see some grown-up alternative comedy…but for kids. Silly sketches, daft jokes; sing-alongs; quizzes; prizes; weird noises, and gales of sweeping laughter.

A Sunday nonsense 

Aimed at children aged 7-16, there are strict rules (the main one being ‘have fun’ and ‘laugh out loud’) such as no swearing, no peanuts, no uniforms and…bring jokes.

Funny Looking Kids stars a cast of four, including some of the north-west’s best-loved character comedians, performers, storytellers and mirth wranglers including Gav Cross, Lee Hithersay, Liam Hale, Alice Rowbottom and Rob Bond.

Gav Cross, storyteller and event creator said:

“The Funny Looking Kids Comedy Club is a celebration of silliness…it is chaos and noise…it is jokes and sketches…it is laughter and loveliness.

We want to make everybody laugh. So it’s not just for kids. We really just like showing off.”

A beautiful place 

Mr Cross also spoke about what it means to the comedy club to have been invited back to Ordsall Hall: 

“Ordsall Hall is this amazing, beautiful venue- a Tudor hall and of course the Tudors…they were known for their parties. I think the first owner bankrupted himself. They like foolery, they love nonsense, they love misrule and so it’s very appropriate for us to be in a Tudor hall because, you know, and I’m no historian, but post that.

“The puritans came in and they did things like ban Christmas, banned frivolity and all that. And it really was a response to the Tudors who embodied that eat, drink and be merry. Now we won’t be selling a drink or food- there’s a café there. But being merry is exactly what we are after.”

Jennifer Holland, audience development and events manager at Ordsall Hall, said: “We are delighted to be bringing back this very funny and unique children’s show to Ordsall Hall. The fact that this historic house has introduced kids comedy to its weekend events programme ties nicely into the Hall’s past of being the scene of parties, jesters and social humour.’
