Eoin Doyle has kept up his remarkable goal scoring record to send his Swindon Town side top of League 2.
Salford City took an early lead from a Adam Rooney penalty, after Swindon keeper Steven Benda fouled Rooney after a poor first touch.
But it didn’t take long for Swindon to equalise. The prolific Eoin Doyle scoring after Michael Doughty slid the ball through to the feet of the Irishman.
The game settled down after the two goals in the first 10 minutes, with both teams having their own chances to take the lead. Rooney’s run was received with a through ball from Joey Jones, but Rooney’s shot passed just wide of the post. Swindon captain Mathieu Baudry had arguably the best chance of the first-half, after his header from the six-yard box looped over the bar.
As the second half resumed Swindon were awarded their own penalty, after Salford captain Liam Hogan handballed a Jerry Yates shot. Eoin Doyle stepped up to score his 16th goal of the season, a goal tally unmatched in all 4 of the English Leagues.
It was Yates’ follow up to Doyle’s deflected shot that made it 3-1 to the visitors and made the game virtually over. Doyle even had the chance to make it 4-1, but he blazed a sitter over the bar, denying him his hat-trick.
Salford however did save themselves a consolation goal, after Adam Rooney converted his second penalty of the evening, but it was all over after that spot kick proving to be the last kick of the game.
Salford slip one place down to 12th. The Ammies travel to face Burton Albion in an FA Cup round one replay on Tuesday.
