Salford City Council and the University of Salford are collaborating with IGHomeless and Social Bite charities to organise the World’s Big Sleep Out that will take place outside of Salford Museum on December 7th.
Paul Dennett, Salford City Mayor, is due to join the staff, students, and the Salford community on the Big Sleep Out with the 50,000 others around the globe taking part.
The Big Sleep Out will raise money and awareness to help combat homelessness and street sleeping, through allowing the general public to experience a night in the life of a homeless person.
Salford alone has 1,088 homeless people, the Big Sleep Out will help raise money for The Narrowgate project, which provides emergency night shelter as well as day time services for homeless people in Salford.
Paul Dennett, Salford Mayor, said: “I have a passionate interest in housing and the reduction of homelessness in the city and it is one of the council’s top priorities. Together with other members of the staff from the City Council, I will be sleeping out on the night as part this great initiative.”
Big Sleep Outs will be taking place in Chicago, Edinburgh, Dublin, Los Angeles, Madrid and all over the world.
IGHomelessness said: “Our vision is that within a generation we will live in a world where everyone has a place to call home – a home that offers security, safety, autonomy, and opportunity.”
Those taking part in the Big Sleep Out will have access to the University Maxwell Hall building for toilets and hot drinks, there is also set to be full security on the night.
