Salford charity Langworthy Cornerstone is celebrating the success of its Men’s Health Project and is urging men to open up and talk about their health issues to mark the month of “Movember”.
The Movember Foundation takes over November to tackle some of men’s main health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention.
According to the Movember website: “70% of men say their friends can rely on them for support, but only 48% say that they rely on their friends.
“In other words: we’re here for our mates, but worried about asking for help for ourselves. Reaching out is crucial”.
Kellie Dwan, Project Manager, said that: “men are not always good at reaching out to friends and family and with men’s health and life expectancy in Salford, particularly in places like Langworthy and Seedley, lagging behind the national average and way below more affluent places such as Worsley.”
Manweb was launched in 2016, with funding from Salford CCG’s Innovation Fund and supported 150 men in its first year.
The project has now supported over 250 men. Its ongoing success has seen a regular flow of new members joining the project ranging from ages 16 to 92.
The project claims to take a “Northern, Non-Clinical, Light hearted” approach to helping men get active and stay connected.
As well as encouraging men to access their free NHS Health Checks, they can take part in a range of activities including five-a-side and walking football, social lunch clubs, day trips, weekend residentials, and a local history group.
