Salford based care organisations have banded together in Salford Royal Hospital to celebrate national Allied Health Professionals Day (AHPs).

Stalls manned by local AHPs were placed in the main reception of Salford Royal Hospital with more information about AHPs, dietary and health information for attendees and, of course – plenty of freebies.

It is only the second year that AHPs day has been running, yet there has been no shortage of people getting involved including staff students from Salford University.

Rachael Brandreth, a dietitian and Carrie Biddle, a speech and language therapist proposed the idea of dedicating a day to allied health professionals around the UK. She sent a tweet to the Chief Allied Health Professions Officer (CAHPO) Suzanne Rastrick who was in full support.

AHPs Day is now celebrated nationally.

Emma Frost, AHP support manager at Salford Royal Hospital said:

“Come down to your local hospital, I think everyone is having some sort of event for the day. We’ve got information available and we’re offering a variety of activities that people can get involved with.”

Salford Royal are recognising efforts of different AHP professions, including speech therapists, osteopaths, and radiotherapists who work within the hospital.

The hospital represented 10 out of the 14 allied health professional roles in the UK, with the hope of representing more at future events.

Emma Frost has been a co-organiser of the day which included various free and accessible treatments, including free hearing tests.

She said: “It’s been going really well, there’s a lot of teams to coordinate but so it’s a lot of hard work but it’s all come together nicely.”

Both seasoned staff at the hospital and Salford students were attendees of the event, highlighting the importance of their roles.

AHPs are the 3rd largest clincial workforce within England and so play an important role in the health of many communites.
