Salford & Eccles MP Rebecca Long-Bailey has voiced her opinions on the collapse of airline Thomas Cook.

Long-Bailey took to Twitter to update her following as a representative for the Salford constituency, condemning the government, who had refused to pay the £200 million bill needed to save the firm, as “disgraceful”.

Yesterday, airline firm Thomas Cook announced its administration as thousands of British holiday-makers are left unsupported abroad.

It is estimated that 600,000 customers have been effected with approximately 150,000 British travellers left stranded abroad as a result of the firm entering ‘compulsory liquidation’ in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Thomas Cook Group PLC, which had become a merger with MyTravel Group in 2007 following the defunct of Thomas Cook & Son, founded in 1841, announced their twitter account would no longer be monitored in their statement to the pubic at 2:00am on Monday.

The Civil Aviation Authority is overseeing a rescue operation to ensure that all Thomas Cook customers are able to return safely back to the UK. The public took to Twitter to document the mass disruption the announcement has caused.

Further comments were made by the Shadow Business Secretary in a statement:

“Thanks to the government’s failure to act, staff employed by Thomas Cook may face redundancy while holiday makers risk being left stranded overseas.

“The government must stop its recklessness and step in to avert this crisis by taking an equity stake”
