Sale Sharks have kept their European dreams alive after their 20-10 win over Irish side Connacht tonight in the European Rugby Challenge Cup.
Tries from wingers Byron McGuigan and Denny Solomona and 10 points from the boot of United States international AJ MacGinty ensured a comfortable victory for Steve Diamond’s side.
Despite Connacht having the brighter start and taking an early lead, Sale fought back and took the lead for the first time in the match thanks to Scottish international, McGuigan who showed class to go over in the corner. MacGinty added the extras to provide a bigger cushion.
Five minutes later, the hosts extended their lead through Solomona – MacGinty was unable to stay out of the action as he provided the pass which set up the try.
Two further penalties were added without reply and Sale took a 20-3 half-time lead.
After the break, both sides had prolonged periods with ball in hand, which Connacht capitalised on as centre Kyle Godwin went over with less than 15 minutes to go, adding a consolation try.
The win keeps the Sharks in contention of winning their first European honours since 2005. They will meet either Bristol or French side La Rochelle in the semi-finals on the weekend of 19/20/21 April.
Next up for them is a home Gallagher Premiership clash against Harlequins next Friday night.
