Girl Gang Manchester is throwing a swingin’ 60s party to celebrate a new Beatles-themed dance show on Saturday 30 March at The Lowry Theatre.
Mark Morris’ ‘Pepperland’ show is honoring the 50th anniversary of the Beatles album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, by re-imagining songs from the album with a live music ensemble and choreographed dance routines.
The American choreographer debuted the show in Liverpool and was a hit with the audience, now he’s bringing the 60s to Salford.
Girl Gang Manchester is hosting Swinging Sisters pre and post show parties in The Lowry’s Pier Eight bar.
The bar will be transformed into a reinvention of the iconic Cavern Club, with vintage traders on site, a diamante face jewel station and a yellow submarine photo booth, along with heaps of other activities.
As the event falls on Mother’s Day weekend, Girl Gang are encouraging mums to come along for their ‘Mum and Me’ quiz, as well as a 60s trivia quiz and party games.
The Gang’s Mother’s Day disco has been on their to-do list since they first started running events back in 2016.
Megan Marie Griffith, Artistic Director of Girl Gang Manchester, said: “the Mother’s Day Disco is an event we’re incredibly passionate about.”
She added: “Last years event was so much fun, and incredibly powerful to have women of all ages celebrating together and women over the age of 50 dominating the dance floor.”
There will be a post-matinee party at 3-4:30pm, a pre-evening show at 6:30-8pm and a post-evening show at 9-11:30pm, but guests are invited to come along for the whole day to get the full swingin’ 60’s experience.
Girl Gang are offering a discount code for £10 tickets to the show, which normally range from £11-£29.70, that can be found on the Pepperland page on their website.
This isn’t the first time that Girl Gang Manchester has joined forces with The Lowry.
Girffith said: “We’re so excited to be collaborating with The Lowry for a third time and to have Mark Morris’ amazing Beatles themed dance show Pepperland, and the theme of the iconic era of the 60’s as a stimulus for this year’s event.”
The Pepperland shows are on at the Lowry’s Lyric Theatre on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 March. Friday’s evening performance will also include a post-show Q and A session with the dancers.
As well as all the activities led by Girl Gang, Saturday’s audience will be invited to take part in an on-stage workshop at 4:15pm before the evening show, hosted by the Pepperland dancers taking inspiration from the show’s choreography.
