Sale Sharks missed out on victory in ‘The Big One’ as they suffered a 22-17 defeat at the hands of the Newcastle Falcons at St. James’ Park.
The Sharks failed to consolidate their top six spot in the Gallagher Premiership despite a try each from wingers Denny Solomona and Byron McGuigan and a penalty from the boot of South African scrum-half, Faf de Klerk.
Solomona opened the scoring following a brilliant phase of play which de Klerk started, before offloading to Tom Curry who then found the hands of the winger.
They put in a solid first half performance and took a 10-6 half-time lead.
However, their hard work in the first-half was undone when they conceded their lead by leaking 13 points in the opening 15 minutes of the second period.
Former England international, Toby Flood went over for the hosts and scrum-half Sonatane Takulua added the remaining points to round off an impressive display in front of 27,384 fans.
McGuigan went over in the corner four minutes from time to pick up the losing bonus point.
The defeat wasn’t what the Sharks would have been hoping for given that they have a European Challenge Cup quarter-final at home to Connacht next Friday night.
