University rowing athletes from both Salford and Chester have been left feeling despondent after they were told that their Media City ‘Varsity’ race couldn’t take place outside due to too much debris in the water.

A spokesman from the Salford University Boat Club stated: “We’ve had to put the athlete’s safety first. The weather hasn’t been kind this last week, leaving a lot of debris floating by the landing stage, making it dangerous for all competing today.
“As a club, we’re obviously really gutted about moving the event indoors, but we’re sure it will still be a great afternoon of racing for both Salford and Chester.”
The Quays have gained attention recently after pictures of rubbish and litter found in its water left people frustrated and calling for action.
The location isn’t a stranger to hosting big races either, having been the venue for the ‘Sport Relief’ celebrity rowing race which took place back in March 2018.
The race, which is set to take place at 13:30 will still go ahead as scheduled though, but will now be taking place at the Watersports centre also located in Media City.
