The University of Salford Students Union and LGBT society have teamed up with the LGBT Foundation to raise awareness of HIV and the medication PrEP, which can protect against contracting the virus.
The Let’s Get on PrEP! event on the 26th of Feburary will aim to educate people on the effects of PrEP, and why it is essential in preventing the spread of HIV. The free event will start at 2pm with activities running until 8pm across the university campus.
The event will begin with a PrEP workshop, giving valuable information about the drug and the impact it has on preventing the spread of HIV. Other events held throughout the day will include PrEP ‘craftivism’, a drinks reception, as well as a film screening and panel discussion.
A line-up of speakers are also expected to attend with activists, charity workers, and doctors in attendance to give more information and share personal experiences they have had with PrEP.
PrEP does not cure HIV but instead is taken by a HIV negative person to prevent them catching the disease. Education on this medication is essential as the drug could potentially save lives. Despite it’s startling success rate, the drug is not available on the NHS.
