The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice starting at 12pm today, and likely to run until 11am tomorrow.
Rain turning into snow then ice is to be expected, particularly on hills, creating ice on untreated roads, walkways and cycle lanes.
The Met Office warns commuters that some roads and railways are likely to be affected, leading to longer journey times by car as well as bus and train services.
Drivers are advised to take extra care and stick to the main roads if possible. They should avoid steep hills and exposed roads hills and exposed areas are likely to present more challenging driving conditions in snow and ice.
The Met Office also warns pedestrians against slips and falls on icy surfaces.
Network Rail is preparing for adverse weather, with six snow ploughs and eight de-icing trains on standby across the country.
Phil James, head of operations for Network Rail, said: “Careful planning for the winter months means we have measures in place to help keep trains and passengers moving during cold snaps.
“Our fleet of trains and dedicated teams will help clear ice and snow and deal with rail issues should they arise.
“To be prepared, I would urge passengers to always plan their journeys and check before they travel for the latest information.”
Gritters have been out in Salford overnight to prepare roads for snow and ice.
