A 13-year-old Salford Red Devils super fan offered to give up all of his Christmas money to the club he loves.
The club were so impressed with the gesture, from Cael Curran, that they sent along players Jackson Hastings and Joey Lussick to visit the youngster who wanted his Christmas money to go into the clubs funding campaign, Squad Builder.
Cael was then invited to the training ground, where he met the players and was given the opportunity to help train the Red Devils team from the dugout at the AJ Bell Stadium. He was also allowed to stand on the touchline with the coaching staff whilst the team had a training session against Rochdale Hornets.
The 13-year-old also got to sit in on a video session with the coaching staff and players where he would get an insight into the teams tactics and how they setup on a day he will never forget.
Cael’s Dad, Andy told Salford Now, “When he (Cael) saw the advertisement for the squad builder, he asked me if it was something he could do. He understands that fans contribute what they can, to take the club forward.”
“Ian Blease got in touch and said how impressed he was with Cael’s offer, and had spoken to Jackson Hastings who had been blown away by the offer.
“Cael was gobsmacked, it took him a while for it to register. He didn’t speak for a while.
“Everybody was really accommodating and really welcoming, chatting to him and signing his shirt.
“It was a great experience for him, and one he’s still talking about now. It was a great day.”
Salford Red Devils surprise young fan
The club use the Squad Builder campaign as a way of helping raising funds for the club, securing its future. The club does not operate with a benefactor model, so is self sufficient.
Fans are given the option to contribute extra money to the club, with incentives included depending on how much you contribute. Fans can contribute as little as £100 and qualify for the silver package, or up to £500 for the platinum.
This comes after former Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash wrote off the clubs outstanding debt to him, thus helping to secure the clubs future.
