A new project to tackle ‘period poverty’ across Salford will go ahead after it secured funding – and the group behind it needs the help of residents from across the city.
The Salford Foodshare Network (SFN) will now consult people in the local community about what they feel the project should look like.
The work, conducted in partnership with Salford Citizen’s Advice Crisis Team, will include fostering projects in different parts of the city by working with community activists to create a “central process”.
Statistics show the stark reality of so-called ‘period poverty’, with nearly half of all women in Salford have struggled to afford sanitary products – with 28 percent avoiding paying their bills to pay for sanitary products.
Salford CA and Salford FSN will also both be posting on social media over the next couple of weeks to encourage people to tell them what they feel the key issues in the community are.
Tom Togher, from Salford Citizens Advice, said: “[Our] survey indicated there were quite significant issues around the subject, so that’s what put us in mind to try and do some work around it.
“We want to carry out development work to make sure people are doing things in local communities – we don’t want to take away from local.”
“I think the real effort will be to think about it as an ongoing process and encourage women to say what they think the project would look like.
“Over the next few days we will be saying to the world – tell us your ideas, tell us your thinking.”
Salford FSN will be holding an open meeting next month to discuss the plans for the campaign and are welcoming any ideas.
We are delighted to be able to announce that we’ve secured some funding to run a Period Poverty campaign in Salford. Working in partnership with @SalfordCAB‘s Crisis Team. We’re really keen to hear from anyone who would like to help us, & plan to hold an open meeting next month.
