Salford Ceremonial Mayor and Mayoress, Ronnie and Pat Wilson, hailed an event to support those living with dementia and their carers.
Ronnie and Pat Wilson were in attendance at Swinton’s Grand Palais to support Dancing With Dementia, a monthly event which provides an opportunity for people with dementia and their families to socialise and have fun in a non-clinical environment
Ceremonial Mayoress Pat Wilson said: “The music and movement allows people living with dementia and their carers to relive memories from their past.”
“You can see people who begin to dance as soon as they hear the music as they are reminded of their youth,” she added.
Both the Mayor and Mayoress stressed the importance of having social events for older members of the community, not just those who suffer with dementia.
Dementia is the overall term that describes a group of symptoms relating to severe memory loss. In Salford there are over 1000 people living with a diagnosis of dementia.
Founder Jeanette Cutt, who sadly lost her sister to dementia, set up the event along with her friends Lesley Fisher and Anne Bellis.
She said “The event aims to combat the stigma associated with dementia, and also provides a safe place where people can enjoy themselves and forget their troubles.”
The next Dancing with Dementia will be held at The Grand Palais, Swinton on 12th November.
