Week 53 festival, The Lowry’s cross-arts extravaganza , is back for another year to champion ‘the compulsively curious’.
From Thursday the 17th May until Monday the 28th May, The Lowry will be transformed and filled with talented and interesting people.
Coinciding with the Lowry’s 18th birthday, Week 53 is returning this year to challenge convention and celebrate the ‘coming of age.’
Throughout the festival over 100 artists and 70 performances are set to wow Salford.
The festival includes bold and intimate art by renowned painter Chantal Joffe, adaptations of classic performances such as Swan Lake, and frank discussions about issues facing young people like sex and drugs.
Week 53 will also see a commission based on the British Book Awards Biography of the Year, ‘Toast’ which tells the story of Nigel Slater’s childhood, told through the tastes and smells he grew up with.
The festival will also see an immersive film screening by Girl Gang Manchester- female collective artists, activists, academics and party instigators.
The Girl Gang aim to create inclusive, fun, and safe events to help champion and create friendships.
At week 53, Manchester Girl Gang will be screening the 90’s coming of age film Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
The screening is a lot more than just the film.
The Lowry will be turned into a 90’s paradise and will have dancing, DIY crafts, live art, and activities encouraging people to participate and let their hair down.
Megan Marie Griffith, girl gang’s artistic director, said:
“We are so proud to be part of the Lowry’s Week 53 programme.
”This is out first big commission and we can’t wait for people to see how much more ambitious this support will enable us to be.
”Like our previous immersive screenings, Romy and Michele will be a show stopping event produced with masses of passion and creativity.”
Megan encourages you to come along and join in with the gang. They would love to have you.
Week 53 festival will also see The Lowry’s foyer transformed into the physicalisation of the human nervous system with lights, electronics, and ropes by Belgium artist Tom Dekyvere.
The festival events range from free to £20.
Tickets are available to book online for each production.
