ANIMAL retailer Pets at Home has supported the Santa Paws campaign set up by the Support Adoption for Pets charity that aims to feed over 2 million abandoned pets this Christmas.
The appeal will take place in stores all over the country and will run until December 24th.
The staff at each store will ask customers to donate 50p when they get to the till as part of the initiative, which is all it takes to fund one dinner for a homeless pet this Christmas.
People can also can also donate £3 by texting BOWL01 to 70070, or an amount of their choosing online at supportadoptionforpets.co.uk/santapaws.
Support Adoption for Pets has supported over 1,000 animal charities across the UK and Northern Ireland since it was established in 2006, earning the title of the UK’s number one grant giving animal charity.
Support Adoption for Pets has raised more than £3.1 million in the past year to support rehoming their centres to allow them to continue the vital work they do.
Fundraising manager, Amy Wilson, said:
“So many people buy a present for their pet and put it under the tree at Christmas and what we’re saying is think about a pet that is not going to get spoiled this Christmas.
“We ask customers to make a donation of 50p to buy a pet in a rescue its Christmas dinner.”
Through the charity’s close relationship with Pets at Home, it offers unique support to hundreds of pet rehoming centres across the UK, including opportunities for local fundraising initiatives.
Donating over £1million every year through an extensive Grant Programme, the charity helps to rehome thousands of dogs, cats and domestic pets in the UK by supporting rescues with the costs of vet bills, food and shelter and the building of rescue facilities, using money donated by the public in Pets at Home stores.
In addition, Support Adoption for Pets also operates over 400 rescue centres in stores for small pets in need of a loving home.
Peter Oakley, manager of Salford’s Pets at Home store, said:
“Last year we raised nearly £2,000 in the shop but as a whole company we raised more than £1,000,000.
“This year we have provided 1.2 million meals for the dogs and that is in ten days.”
Emma Billington, who re-homes dogs from all over the world and runs a day care and rescue centre, gave her thoughts on why there are so many dogs that will be without a home this Christmas.
“We’re a disposable society, very much following fashion these days.
“Whereas it used to be the standard pedigrees now it’s the mixed breeds and everybody then gets bored of them or wants the latest things and they actually just get rid.”
