LOTS of ‘gourd’ pups gathered at Exchange Square as it welcomed Halloween themed walkies and a costume competition for both human and furry friends.

The event took place on Saturday morning and showcased 50 dogs and their owners in their unBOOlievable costumes for a chance to win one of three prizes.

Dogs and owners were directed to follow the flags through the city centre to parade their costumes as the judges watched on to decide. The awards were for the scariest costume, best dog and owner costume, and best in show.

The competition awarded the prize for ‘scariest costume’ to social media star Phil, the 9 stone Malamute, who has over 346K followers. His owner, Emily Matthews, said: “We’re so happy we’ve won, he’s a star and I’m sure he’s very happy. I’m proud of him.”

The prize for ‘best in show’ was given to owner Tom and pup Libby,  and ‘best owner and dog costume’ to Saffron and Zeus. The competition was announced live on stage after the walk.

A hamper and treats from Chorlton’s canine lifestyle shop Betty and Butch, along with a meal for three (two humans and one pup) at Albert’s Schloss were a couple of the prizes awarded.

Hayley Graham, 20, who walked alongside the parade said: “It was great fun. I love dogs and Halloween so this event was just amazing. I would definitely come again next year.”

The 20 minute walk started in Exchange Square in Manchester centre and continued down New Cathedral Street:

The pooch parade is another event alongside Manchester’s Halloween festivities. The streets are filled with pumpkin lanterns as well as landmarks being lit up in green as part of ‘Halloween in the City’ running through October 21 to 31. A haunted maze has also popped up in St. Ann’s Square as part of the festivities, which has included a goth and steampunk fashion show and a Halloween-themed family rave.

The parade has not yet been confirmed for next year.
