Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City do not have a significant enough Premier League lead yet, despite going five points clear of rivals United.
Manchester City recorded their eleventh straight win in all competitions on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Burnley at the Etihad stadium. The victory also saw the Citizens become the only team in the Premier League to keep their unbeaten start to the season, after rivals United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Huddersfield Town.
Manager Pep Guardiola was delighted with the result against what he described as a tough Burnley side.
“In the end we were able to score enough goals and create enough chances and concede none. Against Burnley it is always difficult to defend the long balls and the second balls but we defended these actions really well. After the second goal, especially the second half we played so good in terms of control and attacking in the right moment.
The win also saw City extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points, however Guardiola isn’t getting too carried away and believes the gap is not good enough to count United out yet.
“In May it is significant, in October it’s not. We are going to lose games of course. I am happy for the eleven wins in a row. It shows we can win a lot of games but football today is so demanding. We know when we are not playing well we will lose games, any team can beat us.”
The major talking point of the game proved to be the referee’s decision to award Manchester City penalty in the first half. Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope was adjudged to have brought down Bernardo Silva in the box by referee Roger East, however there was some doubt over whether there was enough contact for the former Monaco forward to go down. Despite the controversy, Guardiola is in no doubt that the decision was correct.
“It’s a penalty. I saw it, it’s a penalty. He touched the right foot of Bernardo. It’s a penalty.”
Sergio Aguero took the controversial penalty and slotted it past Pope to give City the lead. The goal was Aguero’s 177th for the blues, making him the clubs all time joint top scorer.
He will now have the chance to become Manchester City’s all time top scorer on Wednesday when City take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.
