The ultimate cycling challenge is coming to Manchester in the next couple of weeks which will be sure to test the endurance of the most competent cyclists.

Cyclone24, is an event run by Stills Branding which will take place on the 6th and 7th of May at The National Cycling Centre in Manchester, the home of Team GB.

At the velodrome, teams of 6 competitors will race against each other to raise money for St Ann’s Hospice, which is located in Cheadle, Cheshire.cyc

As it is a 24-hour event, team members will be taking it in turns to ride around the track in a relay like fashion from 12 noon on Saturday 6th May till the following time on Sunday 7th May.

Zoe Westerman, an organiser for the event commented on her excitement for the competition, saying: “It’s always really nice to see people taking part that have never done it before as it is quite a fun and enduring event!”

The 12 teams which are competing consist of six people of a range of skillsets, from beginner to accomplished cyclist, with taster sessions which have been in place at the centre for training six months prior to the event.

On the day equipment will be provided for anyone involved which includes, bikes, helmets, cycling shoes, electronic chip timing, mechanical support, physio support, energy nutrition, track coach guidance, refreshments, hot showers, free parking and free entry for spectators.

“Riding as a team for 24 hours on 42 degree banking, with no brakes on a fixed gear bike is certainly a challenge, and we can’t wait to see how the teams get on,” says Zoe.

We are delighted to be supporting St Ann’s Hospice, a fantastic facility, providing care for those with a range of life limiting conditions, and to be bringing the Cyclone24 challenge to Manchester, the home of Team GB.”

With tests of strength, team spirit and determination the teams will be competing to have fun, test their abilities and raise money for St Ann’s Hospice, a charity who pride themselves on being one of the largest and oldest adult hospices outside London.

Claire Briscoe, Marketing and Communications Manager at St Ann’s Hospice said: “It’s a team event, and that really chimes with what we do at the hospice – we are a huge team looking after our patients wellbeing, each member of staff or volunteer has their part to play in making our patients lives better.”

cycl It’s really humbling actually to see so many people want to get involved and support a local charity.  And to do something so difficult too!  It’s amazing!”

Claire explains that the smallest figures can make a big impact to the charity, with hundreds of people benefiting from contributions.

“Every penny raised really does make a huge difference to local people. Our patients benefit in lots of ways – whether that’s those who come to us as inpatients for care they receive at the end of life, or those who come to us as outpatients and receive help managing symptoms, enjoying therapies, taking part in creative activities, seeking counselling or other support,” said Claire.

We really look after the whole person, and can help those with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses right from the point of diagnosis, through treatment, and beyond.  We support carers and family members of our patients too.  So as you can see, events like this that raise money and awareness of the hospice are invaluable.”

There is currently a total of 72 people taking part in this year’s event, which is running for its first time in Manchester this year after three years’ success in other locations across the country which have raised £60,000 to date.

The atmosphere is always very upbeat and positive, with great camaraderie between teams. Everyone motivates and supports each other. It can get tough, especially in the early hours 1am to 3am when everyone is very tired, but they still work together to motivate each other,” commented Zoe.

There are four more team spaces left to sign up if you and five of your friends or colleagues are up for the challenge!
