SALFORD Devils ground out a record fifth straight BetFred super league win for the first time at home to local rivals Leigh Centurions, eventually running out 12-6 winners.
In terrible conditions that deteriorated as the game wore on, Salford took the lead with a penalty after 14 minutes, Michael Dobson with the kick.
The game ebbed too and flow until the half hour mark when Mitch Brown put the visitors in front, with Ben Reynolds adding the conversion to leave it 2-6.
It looked like that would be it for the scoring in the half until Kris Welham found himself with a rare sight of the try line, and crossed to level the score at 6-6, with Dobson missing the kick, it was all square as the teams went in to the break.
The second half was again a too and fro affair, with defences being on top, and balls being spilt by both sides.
Indeed, it wasn’t until the 68th minute that a rare gap in the otherwise solid Leigh defence opened up for Gareth O’Brien to slip over and break the deadlock. With Dobson accurate with the boot, it was 12-6.
With both sides desperate for the points, it was a case of who would blink first, but Salford held firm, and despite an attempt at a drop goal going wide, the score remained 12-6 at the full time hooter.
With Salford travelling to France to take on the Catalan Dragons, and Leigh at home to Challenge cup winners Hull FC, the short turn about for both sides at the mid point of the regular season will go a long way to show where these two clubs will finish at the end of the season
