Greater Manchester Firefighters have put their water hoses to a happier use – to wash cars for charity.
Firefighters across Manchester rolled up their sleeves and raised more than £10,000 over the weekend for their national charity.
The Fire Fighters Charity raises money for fire and rescue service personnel and help to promote rehabilitation, health and well-being, nursing, recuperation, and a child and family programme.
Alan Knell, from The Fire Fighters Charity, said: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Greater Manchester – you’ve knocked it out the park this year!
“We would like to say a huge thank you to those who have donated and also to those who have given their time up to make these events happen.
“The national car wash league provides a vital source of income for the Charity. It costs £8.5 million a year to keep The Fire Fighters Charity running and with no regular Government funding, we rely completely on donations like these to keep us going.”

Bolton Central were the station that enjoyed the most custom over the weekend, raising a total £1,278. Eccles also raised more than a £1,000. Six other stations over Greater Manchester raised over £300.
Group Manager Gary Jarvis, GMFRS charity coordinator added: “We’ve been amazed at the total we’ve brought in this year.”
“Over 25 stations have taken part and I’d like to thank all those who have organised these events including our on and off-duty firefighters, cadets, Prince’s Trust members and our community volunteers.”
“The Fire Fighters Charity supports a huge number of people and is not just for our operational staff but can lend support and help to anyone who works for the fire service and their dependents.”
So today we helped raise at least £1000 for the @firefighters999 washing cars at our station, THANKYOU for those who came! @manchesterfire pic.twitter.com/uxT9DbX0c1
