Transport for Greater Manchester have revealed plans to invest £400 million in local train stations over the next two decades.
If the bid is successful, commuters could be visiting a GP, post office, gym or even a gig at their local station.
TfGM have submitted its ‘Case for Change’ to the Department of Transport to bring Greater Manchester’s rail stations under local control.
Their plans include to buy back control of the stations as they are currently owned by Network Rail and other train companies.
If granted government approval, travel and transport leaders would launch a 150-year take-over by the end of 2018.
Commuters, however, could see 
work begin on small to medium stations shortly after this time such as Manchester Oxford Road and Victoria, which could be transferred in the mid-2020s.
Greater Manchester leaders say that stations such as Wigan, Bolton, Oxford Road and Victoria could become beautiful spaces and community hubs.
Not only would commuters be able to take part in recreational activities, there are plans to transform spaces into meeting rooms and training offices.
Tony Lloyd, Greater Manchester Mayor, said stations do not currently meet the expectations of passengers so he believes it is important to develop these spaces.
He added that the plan made financial sense and would benefit communities and put passengers first.
When the Government has an agreed position, they will make a recommendation to the Secretary of State for Transport.
Approval is expected before the summer with a detailed plan expected by the end of 2017.
