AFTER Macclesfield’s dominant 3-0 away win over Wrexham, we look at the stars and stinkers of the show at the Racecourse.
Star: John McCombe
The Silkmen defender was superb at the back, making a number of interceptions at key moments to stop Wrexham building any sort of attack.
His movement around the back line also restricted strike partners McDonagh and Harrad.
The only reason the centre half didn’t continue this form into the second half is that Wrexham were that toothless in attack, the entire defence wasn’t left with all that much to do.
Stinker: Jordan White
He may have only been on the pitch for around 20 minutes, but the centre forward will want to forget this game in far less time.
The elephant in the room; an atrocious penalty miss in injury time that would have sent the host fans home a little less bruised by the events of last night.
He also continued the trend that was rife throughout the Wrexham squad: providing poor service to the strikers, who all allowed Macclesfield’s midfield to dominate the game.
There was no sense of tempo or urgency when he came on to cut the two goal deficit at the time, a key reason as to why The Silkmen eventually got a third.
Star: Danny Whitaker
The midfielder put in one of his best displays in a Silkmen shirt last night.
Not only did he control the tempo of the game, he made both teams adapt to his, as he played a key box to box role.
Two key moments stood out: tracking back to put in an excellent challenge on Tilt in the first half, and surging forward in the second to score the goal that put the game beyond doubt for the travelling fans.
An all round superb performance that, if Whitaker can keep up through the Christmas period, will see Macclesfield enter the promotion hunt for sure.
Stinker: Kai Edwards
You know your defence has had a poor game when you lose 3-0 and home supporters think ‘that could have easily been five’.
However, Edwards’ was particularly poor, failing to deal with the threat of dangerman Danny Rowe throughout the game.
The full back was a yard off the pace of Rowe, who was given acres of space to cut inside and create chances.
Rowe’s second goal was a prime example of this, as Edwards allowed him to ghost past with consummate ease, before blasting home a deflected finish.
Star: Danny Rowe
The winger once again proved just how vital he is to this Macclesfield team.
Rowe took a key chance to put The Silkmen a goal up in the second half.
It was his overall menace that made him particularly impressive, however; his close control was similar to Luis Suarez, as he took people on and powered passed Wrexham defenders on the wing and inside.
The former Stockport County player is blossoming at The Moss Rose, and, with performances like tonight, he may potentially be on the radar for Football League sides.
Stinker: Luke Coddington
The fact Wrexham’s goalkeeper was given man of the match is still baffling.
Not only did he position his body awkwardly enough for Rowes shot that it deflected in off him, his lack of aggression during the goalmouth scramble further lead to the Mitch Hancox goal.
Neither were moments that deserve such an honour, and I doubt the keeper will think of this as the best accolade he has won.
Had neither of those errors took place, Wrexham might have had a chance, and would have potentially been in a much better position had they played the experienced Shwan Jalal instead.
