The Manchester Metropolitan University rounders team have won their first game of the year against the University of Chester.

The match took place on Wednesday 23rd November with a two hour long game at home, where they had 30 good bowls on both teams. The score ended with 11 and a half to 13.

During the match there are two rounds where both teams have two turns at both batting and fielding.

The rounders team has been running for around four years and lost to Chester in a game last year, so it was a great achievement for them to take back a win.

Imogen Edwards, 21, is the social secretary for the team, she is also the bowler for the team most of the time.

She said “I’m really proud of the girl’s first performance.”

Imogen has also been playing rounders for a long time. She competed during high school where she was the captain of the team.

This year MMU has a fairly new team as many of the team last year were third year students who have moved on. One new addition to the team is the captain, Jordi Mathews, 19, who is in her first year at university. She is an England scholar who is sponsored through her degree and so she is a great new addition to the team.

Imogen said, “The second team, led by Jordi, really did hold their ground.”

To make the game that little bit more special, the girls wore their “It’s OK” t-shirts. The “It’s OK” campaign is looked at by all of the university societies and tackles mental health.

There are 19 girls involved in the team, however only nine played in the match on the day.

The team also has six committee members which includes a president, two vice presidents, a treasurer, a secretary and a social secretary.

Sports teams rarely come away from a match without some form of injury, and for the MMU girls, those injuries consisted of friction burn from Imogen during a dive for a ball, and a slip into a pile of leaves from Charlotte, one of the team’s fielders.

The girls train once a week on a Monday and so they felt it was a great achievement for them to see their hard work pay off.

Imogen said, “I’m sure we will have the same standard performance at our away game in a couple of weeks.”

The girls will have a rematch against the University of Chester.

Here is Imogen’s thoughts on the game and the teams progress so far.
