THE UNIVERSITY of Salford has won a commission from the Women’s Equality Party (WEP) to provide a creative arts installation at their first party conference, which is set to take place at Trafford’s Victoria Warehouse next week.
The WEP were founded in March last year and push for equal representation in politics, business, industry and throughout working life in the UK.
Hannah Peaker, Chief of Staff at the Women’s Equality Party, said: “University of Salford prides itself on having a diverse students body, and is dedicated to equality in education, empowerment and community.
In this, the University’s aims align perfectly with those of the Women’s Equality Party and that’s why they were our first choice to add such an exciting, creative and thought-provoking energy to our first ever conference.”
Next week’s conference will include talks from founding members Sandi Toksvig, Sophie Walker and Catherine Mayer as well as a talk from X Factor’s Sinitta on the challenges she faced within the music industry.
The event, which is expected to attract 1,500 delegates, will also showcase historical performances from student actors and music provided by emerging female musicians. There will also be a comedy evening with a line-up including Sara Pascoe, Yuriko Kotani, Cally Beaton and Jenny Collier.
Salford students will contribute visual art, design and creative media, including work from young female artists in the Graphics, Fashion, Photography and Visual Arts industry.
Frances Piper, Director of Performance and Film Studies at the University of Salford, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity and we are delighted to have been commissioned. We aim to provide all of our students with real world experience, to increase their opportunities for employment.
This installation work hugely raises the profile of our ‘live briefs’ and puts University of Salford students on a far bigger stage than they would otherwise achieve at this point in terms of their careers. The work forms part of their overall course portfolio and will be seen by 1,500 people – including potential future employers.”
Next week’s event won’t be the first link between the University of Salford and WEP, as Salford midwifery student Nicolette Peel received a nomination for a Women of the Year Award chaired by Sandi Toksvig and Salford Business School student Sophie Iredale organised #WomenoftheNorth: Moving in, Moving on, Moving Up, which provided a platform to promote and inspire women in technology.
