Salford City welcome National League North rivals Worcester City to Moor Lane on Saturday, where a win could propel them into the playoff spots. Quays News Russell Edge looks ahead to the game.
The Ammies sit eighth in the table on 30 points, two points behind fifth placed Tamworth, who take
on struggling Stalybridge Celtic.
Worcester meanwhile occupy twelfth in the league, having gained 22 points so far this campaign.
Both sides come into the game in good form, with victories in both their last two fixtures.
Worcester overcame AFC Telford United 2-1 at home in the league, whilst Salford had to fight back
from 3-1 down to win their game against Hyde United in the Manchester Premier Cup Quarter Final.
Sixteen-year-old goalkeeper Tom Russell was their hero in that game, making some key saves during
the game before saving three out of the four penalties to ensure the team’s progress to the semi-
finals.
Both Salford and Worcester relied on late goals in their games, an 89th minute equaliser from Jordan
Hulme for Salford and a 92nd minute winner from substitute Colby Bishop securing the win for The
Blues.
In form striker Lee Hughes scored for Worcester earlier in the game, with the former West Brom man
having scored 13 in 16 this season.
Meanwhile Mike Phenix leads the goal scoring charts for Salford, with eight in all competitions.
It’s been a hit and miss campaign so far for the visitors, who began the season with an eight game
winless run, including five defeats.
Since then they’ve won seven of their 12 games in all competitions, losing only three in the process,
including a 5-1 drubbing away to Darlington 1883.
Salford meanwhile have seen a decline in form after a brilliant start to the season, with a nine game
unbeaten run which saw them sitting at the top of the table.
However, two wins in their last 10 league games have seen the Ammies fall down the table, and
they’ll be hoping for a positive performance against Worcester to reignite their season.
The Greater Manchester side visit Darlington 1883 in their next fixture, with the North East side 2nd
in the table behind league leaders AFC Fylde.
Meanwhile Worcester will take on other North West side Curzon Ashton away twice in three days, in
both cup and the league.
