BRISTOL band, Coasts, hit Manchester’s Academy 3 in the humid weather of June 7, and our entertainment reporter, Abi White, went along to see what the band had to offer…
Meeting whilst at university in Bath and then moving to Bristol to form the band, the five-piece consisting of Chris, Liam, James, David and Ben only released their self-titled debut album in January this year. Despite only recently releasing an album, the band have appeared at numerous festivals, toured central Europe and North America, and have also had their singles featured on ‘Made in Chelsea’.
Mostly recognised from their single, ‘Oceans’, the bands music could be described as indie with pop qualities weaved throughout their songs. Appealing to a wide audience, the crowd wasn’t just filled with screaming fan girls, but fans of all ages there to see the band.
Opening up the evening was singer, HUNTAR. Although appearing on stage late, the singer made up for this with his performance, keeping the hot and sticky crowd engaged throughout the whole of his set.
The 22-year old, Lewis Mokler, filled his set with charisma and energy, delivering his futuristic pop through synth and electronic drums at an exceptionally high standard. Removing his top towards the end of his support slot, this action heightened some audience members excitement and all of the elements combined throughout resulted in a successful set from the singer.

Due to the delayed starting time from HUNTAR, this meant Coasts’ performance was also delayed. By this point in the evening, the Academy 3 had literally become a sweat box due to the outside temperature, which was only going to heighten when Coasts embarked upon the stage.
Appearing on an orange lit stage, the band were welcomed with a cheer before proceeding to play their first track, ‘Wallow.’ Although it did take a few songs to get the audience jumping, a section of the audience had already erupted into a mosh pit by the band’s third track, ‘Modern Love,’ where a pink atmospheric glow filled the stage. The latest single with its catchy lyrics had the vast majority of the audience singing along.
The whole set was almost a showcase of the band’s new album, including almost every song. Lead singer, Chris Caines was an extremely energetic front man, keeping the audience fixated throughout the whole set – flipping his long locks. However, the heat of the venue caused by the outside temperature and the lively crowd did get to some audience members, who occasionally had to go to the back of the venue to catch their breath.

Coasts also played some of their old singles, one of which, ‘A Rush of Blood,’ was released 2014, and ‘Stay’, which was released in 2012. Despite being released two years ago, the song still went down a storm, with audience members persevering through the intense heat to keep jumping around to the upbeat track.
The band also ended their set with the two best-known tracks, ‘Stone’ and ‘Oceans.’ Ending with the most popular hit, ‘Oceans’, the crowd went insane for the electronic indie tack, perfectly ending the set.
