AMATEUR dramatists have launched a ‘kickstarter’ fund to help them produce the popular Salford-based play, Love on the Dole.
Actors and producers from Salford Community Theatre are in need £500 which will be used to purchase costumes as well as helping to promote the show.
Kickstarter is an independent, founder-controlled company based in New York City. Its website is designed to help artistic projects, such as theatre companies, raise funds to help with their work.
Cat Spobbs is the Community Outreach Manager at the theatre and she is hoping that they can reach their target soon.
She said: “We need £500 for our project which will be going towards vehicle hire. This is really important for us as there is a march during the play where the audience will march with the cast and we do not want to have to limit any elderly audience members.”
Love on the Dole is a novel written in 1932 by Salford-born Walter Greenwood. He based it on his experiences living and working in Salford during the mass unemployment of the Great Depression. It charts the lives of the Hardcastle family as they struggle to make ends meet.
Cat added: “We rehearse on Saturdays and Sundays for about five hours each day. The level of commitment from everyone has been incredible.
“The cast did their own fundraising on April 15 with a night of music and spoken poetry at the Old Pint Pot in Salford.
“We’ve got a competition on to see who can raise the most money.”
The novel was adapted for the stage by Ronald Gow in 1934 and was later made into a film.
There is one month left before the fundraising deadline. If you would like to donate, please visit the kickstarter website at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/684682501/love-on-the-dole-a-community-theatre-performance .
Love on the Dole will be performed at Islington Mill, James Street, from July 5 to July 9. For information about tickets, please call 07519344668.
