A SALFORD based community centre is about to launch a history group in a bid to tackle social isolation and promote men’s health.
Langworthy Cornerstone, on Liverpool Street, will host the first men’s local history group as part of its ManWeb initiative.
Former Coronation Street actor, Nigel Pivaro, has also expressed his support for the group.
Langworthy, in partnership with the NHS, founded ManWeb in response to the growing number of men in Salford that are less likely to have regular health checks and are more likely to face loneliness.
It is open to men aged 16 and above and provides opportunities such as ‘walking football’, healthy cookery and free health checks.
The local history group will start today with a talk by local historian Ray Bullock and the theme will be the history of local pubs.
Each week will see a different theme with topics such as the River Irwell and the origins of street names in the Seedley Langworthy area being discussed.
Kellie Dwan, Men’s Health and Development Officer, has worked at the centre for over 13 years. She hopes that ManWeb will encourage more local men to adopt a healthier lifestyle and to interact more with others in their community.
She said: “In January we realised that not a lot of men were accessing the services at Langworthy Cornerstone.
“We launched ManWeb on February 17 and we have since held outreach events around Salford to try and promote the scheme.”
Since February, Langworthy has seen a rise in the numbers of men using their services.
Kellie, 40, added: “We have had more people use the centre. One gentleman lost his wife a few weeks ago and he now regularly uses the centre.
“We have already seen a positive affect as he told his friends and they are now coming down.”
